The various companies and brigades of volunteer soldiers were mustered into service January 1838 for 3 months. Called to service by Governor William L. March at the request of Martin Van Buren brought to protect from invasion and pillage adjoining territory of the State of New York during the rebellion then in progress in the lower part of Canada against the authority of Great Britain and called the Patriot War. The supposedly correct name of a New York volunteer soldier who served during the Patriot War may not appear in the index for several reasons: He may have served in the Regular Army. He may have served under a different name of used a different spelling of his name or the unit which he served. The reference to the original soldier may have been so vague that it was not practical to determine his correct name. The compilation of service records of volunteer soldiers who served in the Patriot War was begun in 1891 under the direction of Maj. Fred C. Ainsworth, head of the Record and pension division of the War Department. Reproduction of the records included in this index may be obtained from the National Archives for a fee.
